The library is located in the center of Rutland, Massachusetts and is open to all state residents. Following the end of the Civil War, the Rutland Public Library was founded to meet the literary needs of the growing town. Today the library continues to serve the public with a prolific borrowing collection, research materials, and computer equipment.

The Rutland Library is an online affiliate of the Central-Western Mass Automated Resource Sharing system, CW/MARS. As an online affiliate, the library can request books from other libraries however Rutland issues its own library cards. Patrons cannot use these cards at other libraries, nor can CW/MARS cards be used in Rutland.
